Ichitaro Kanie, Kagome’s founder, first succeeded in cultivating tomatoes in Japan in 1899. His success led to the formation of Kagome Co., Ltd. of Japan (Kagome Japan.) From Kanie-san’s humble tomato garden has grown a company that is now the largest producer of tomato products in Japan. And no longer just a tomato company, Kagome Japan has expanded its product line to include a range of fruit and vegetable products, beverages, microwavable meals, and pro-biotic drinks, all of which follow the company’s mission to provide foods that are close to nature. Through innovation, research and development, Kagome Japan has pioneered new technologies designed to retain the maximum flavor, color, and nutritional value of fruits and vegetables. Their patented Reverse Osmosis technology is used to produce second-to-none quality fruit juices. The Kagome Japan research facility maintains the largest privately-held tomato seed bank housing over 6,000 seed varieties and they are able to use these varieties to help growers tailor tomatoes to the regions and growing conditions throughout the world.

Kagome, in Japanese, describes a special star-pattern woven basket that Kanie-san used to pick tomatoes from his backyard.

In 1988, Kagome Japan established Kagome Inc. (Kagome) in Los Banos, California. The state-of-the-art production facility was completed in 1990, and we began shipping sauces to restaurant chains across the nation. Today, Kagome is known as one of the premier customized sauce developers and manufacturers for foodservice, servicing customers domestically and as far away as Asia, the Middle East, and Australia.

To meet growing demand, Kagome has increased capacity at the Los Banos facility and established two facilities in strategic locations. In 2005, Inner Mongolia Kagome Foods Inc. was built and it operates as a subsidiary in China to support global restaurant partners in the foodservice industry. Kagome Creative Foods, located near Memphis, Tenn., was added to the Kagome organization in 2007. This acquisition addressed the growing need for a second facility and for distribution in the eastern portion of the U.S. In addition, Kagome Creative brought new product and packaging types to our portfolio.
